The Eastwood Centre will be open for trading from 9am today (Saturday 30th July). Please note that vertical transportation (lifts and escalators) will have limited access and a few shops may not be in a position to open however the remainder of the centre will be back to normal. Due to uncertainty regarding the damage to the access ramp from Trelawney Street, vehicular access to the Eastwood Centre carpark will be via the West Parade only.

NSW Fire Brigade has also cordoned-off the area.

Demolition works will commence in due course.

Council is responsible for the provision of pedestrian and traffic safety and for the removal of any obstruction and/or debris in the affected area.

Businesses on the Northern side of Eastwood plaza began trading on Thursday afternoon and plan to be back to normal from Friday morning. Centro Café and Michels Patisserie were unaffected by the fire and are trading as usual at 7 am.

There is expected to be little disruption on the Southern side of Eastwood Plaza.

Douglas Hanly Moir Pathology and Homers Café have opened for business. Sharon Yip from ANZ Bank expects to open the doors at 9.30am.

The lingerie shop and furniture store have suffered significant damage and will remain closed. The businesses within the Eastwood Shopping Centre will remain closed on Friday while the damage is being assessed.

The road is currently blocked from The Avenue through to Rowe street because of safety concerns. The ramp form Trelawney street to the car park also remains closed. All other access roads into and out of Eastwood remain open.

It is Business as usual within Eastwood.

The selection criteria is broad as the Award aims to acknowledge any person who lives, works or volunteers in Bennelong who, through their initiative, personal time or attainments, have significantly demonstrated actions consistent with AAAB’s objectives (ie. Promoting multiculturalism, cultural harmony & understanding, community education, building relationships between different old & new Australians).

Nomination forms must be received by AAAB by no later than 31 July 2011. 

All nominations will be considered on their merits and assessed by AAAB’s judging panel consisting of local community representatives.  The winner will be presented the award at the AAAB Annual Dinner on 20 August 2011 by John Alexander, Federal MP for Bennelong.

On 11 May 2011, AAAB elected a new executive team for the 2011/2012 year.

Rest assured that I will follow Brad’s foot steps to grow our association to its utmost and extend our coverage to include more groups in our membership.”

Brad Chan was voted Honourary Immediate Past President in recognition of his services to AAAB.

The Eastwood Chamber of Commerce was admitted as AAAB’s newest member at the AGM.

A joint project between City of Ryde, the Australia Korean Welfare Association and the Australian Asian Association of Bennelong, the booklet is particularly aimed at newly arrived migrants and includes information on:

• renting
• avoiding scams
• fire prevention in your home
• workplace safety for teenagers
• what to do if you have a car accident
• safety risks for children
• dangerous spiders, snakes and sea creatures
• water safety – both around pools and at the beach
